Candle Care 101: How to Get the Perfect Burn Every Time

By Harmony Lights Studio · October 8, 2026 · 6 min read

A beautiful candle deserves a beautiful burn. Most candle problems — tunnelling, weak scent, sooty wicks — are not the candle's fault. They come from small habits that are easy to fix. Here is everything we have learned from pouring thousands of candles in our Mission, BC studio.

1. The first burn matters more than any other

Wax has a memory. On the very first burn, let the melted wax reach the full edge of the container before you blow the flame out. This usually takes two to four hours depending on the candle's width. If you only burn it for twenty minutes the first time, the candle will "remember" that small circle and tunnel down the middle for the rest of its life — leaving a thick ring of wasted wax on the sides.

Plan the first burn for an evening when you will be home and awake. Set the candle somewhere you can see it, and give it the time it needs. Every burn after that will be cleaner and more even because of this one patient evening.

2. Trim the wick every single time

Before each burn, trim the wick to about 6 mm (a quarter inch). A wick that is too long creates a tall, flickering flame that throws soot onto the container walls and the air, and it burns through your wax far too quickly. A trimmed wick gives a calm, teardrop-shaped flame and the steadiest scent.

You can use a dedicated wick trimmer, small scissors, or even nail clippers in a pinch. Always remove the trimmed bit from the wax so it does not become debris in the melt pool.

3. Keep candles away from drafts

Open windows, air vents, ceiling fans and busy walkways all make flames dance and lean. A leaning flame heats one side of the container, causes uneven melting, and dramatically increases soot. Choose a still spot — a side table, a mantel corner, a bathroom counter away from the vent — and your candle will burn the way it was designed to.

4. Burn in sessions, not marathons

Three to four hours is the sweet spot for most container candles. Beyond that, the container can overheat, the scent can turn sharp, and the wick can mushroom. If you want fragrance all day, burn in two sessions with a cooling break in between rather than one eight-hour stretch.

5. Let it rest, and keep it covered

After blowing out the flame, let the wax cool and harden completely before moving the candle — liquid wax sloshes and can drown the wick. Between burns, keep a lid on the candle or store it in a cool, dark place. Lids keep dust out of the wax (dust in the melt pool becomes little secondary wicks that smoke) and keep the fragrance from fading.

Maker's tip: if your wick ever leans to one side after a burn, gently nudge it upright with a wick dipper or tweezers while the wax is still soft. A centred wick is the foundation of an even burn.

6. Know when to say goodbye

Stop burning when about 1 cm (half an inch) of wax remains. Burning to the very bottom can overheat the glass, and the last bit of wax is mostly fragrance carrier with little scent left. Rinse the warm container with hot soapy water and you have a lovely little jar for cotton pads, matches, or paperclips.

7. Rescuing a tunnelled candle

If tunnelling has already happened, all is not lost. The simplest fix: on your next burn, loosely wrap a strip of aluminium foil around the top of the container, leaving a small opening in the centre for the flame. The foil reflects heat down onto the trapped wax ring and melts it level again. One or two "foil hugs" can save a candle that looked ruined.

Good candle care is really just attention — the same attention we put into pouring each candle by hand. Treat your candles kindly and they will reward you with dozens of hours of clean, fragrant light.
